On the edge of the village of Plaxtol is the charming Allens House Lodge. Plaxtol village is a little gem nestling in a picturesque fold in the Bourne Valley, one of the most scenically beautiful parts of the garden of England and an area of outstanding natural beauty. With a village store, post office and a butchers with a license to deal in game, Plaxtol has a worldly charm that belies its now small population.
The local pub, The Papermakers Arms, tells the story of the local paper making industry, once a major employer in the village, and is the perfect place for a relaxing evening spent enjoying the roaring log fires or for sampling the delightful Sunday roasts on offer.
If you’re out at night, watch out for tall, fair middle aged lady dressed in all white galloping around on her white horse. The so-called ‘Haunting of Lady Vain’ has been seen and heard in the village in fields that she once owned by many local residents.
The Plaxtol Heritage Walks will take in all the village sites and many more. Further afield, there is plenty to keep you busy, with London a short train ride away and the major towns of Kent within a 30 minute drive. Nearby Ightham Mote is one of the most unusual stately homes in the country and well worth a visit.
