The reserve recreates, from arable fields, traditional wet grazing meadows once common to the flood plain of the River Stour. The habitat attracts large numbers of wetland species. Historically, the land was reclaimed from the river and sea by the Monks of Sandwich and the northern boundary is still the old Monk's Wall of the 13th Century.
