Pugin Town Trail, is a self guided walking trail from the East Cliff to the West Cliff highlighting architecture by the Pugin family. From the marble bust of Edward Pugin on Victoria Parade, the Royal Harbour where Pugin kept his 3-masted lugger "Caroline", St Augustine's Abbey and Monastery to the family home The Grange.
Ramsgate is famed for its connection with the great architect and larger than life leader of the Gothic Revival, Augustus Pugin who along with his talented family, made Ramsgate their home from 1843 onwards. Pugin's own house The Grange, Grade I listed, overlooking the harbour and the church he built close by, are unique, beautiful and architecturally outstanding. He is known for the magnificent interiors, furnishings and fittings of the Houses of Parliament.
Pugin died at the age of 40, on the 14th September 1852, the same day as the Duke of Wellington. He is buried with his wife Jane and other family members below the floor of the chantry in St Augustine's Abbey, a splendid Victorian church.
New in 2020, Kent Steps connecting Harbour Parade (seafront) with Madeira Walk became embellished with colourful tiles, inspired by the tile design of Augustus Pugin. They were designed by local school children as part of a Ramsgate Town Team initiative funded by Historic England.
