The Grange

Heritage and Gardens

* Tours of The Grange are currently suspended due to Covid, but we hope to be up and running soon. *

* Please check website for updates *

The Grange was built in 1843 by the influential Gothic Revival architect Augustus Pugin, as his family home. He built it to live out his idea of life in a medieval, Catholic community.

Augustus Pugin is regarded as being one of Britain’s most influential architects and designers. He designed the interiors of the Houses of Parliament, as well as of many impressive churches and other buildings.

Guided Tours of the ground floor can be booked in advance, every Wednesday afternoon at 2pm and 3pm. Places are limited and must be booked in advance. Entry £4. Anyone wishing to visit will need to make an appointment. To book a place on a Wednesday Tour, please contact The Landmark Trust on 01628 825925 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm)

There is also a small exhibition in the Cartoon Room, a separate building next to The Grange, which provides information about the building, its history and the Pugin family. The Cartoon Room is open on Wednesday afternoons from 2pm - 4pm or by appointment. Entry to the room is free of charge but does not include the main house.

Access Information

The entrance is level and wheelchair-accessible, although there is stony and cobbled ground in the courtyard. Only the ground floor of the building is wheelchair-accessible; access to the upper floor is by staircase, and these become increasingly steep and narrow as they near the top of the building.

Information boards and written materials are available to view in a ground floor reception room, where seating is also provided. Please telephone for information about alternative formats, special tours, etc.

There is one ground floor accessible toilet close to the entrance.

There are no reserved parking spaces for The Grange, but there is parking along Royal Esplanade which starts less than 50 metres away.
