DISCOVER CHARLES DICKENS ROCHESTER - An online guided tour

2nd April - 3rd September 2021

Hailed as Englands finest novelist, Charles Dickens left behind a literary legacy unmatched by any other writer. Over 300 novels, novellas, and short stories covering many of the social issues he championed throughout his adult life. Titles such as David Copperfield, Great Expectations, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Oliver Twist, and of course, the novella that changed the way we celebrate Christmas forever... A Christmas Carol. He was known for drawing on real people for his characters and their names, and he also used real places and buildings woven into the complex plots he created. As a result, in Rochester - a beautifully preserved historic former City about 30 miles southeast of London - we have more Dickens related buildings and locations per square mile than ANYWHERE ELSE in the WORLD! Miss Havisham's home, Satis House, in Great Expectations; John Jaspers Gatehouse in Edwin Drood; The Bull Inn in Pickwick Papers - and many, many more. Come on a 90+ minute LIVE online guided tour with TOP RATED local tour guide and historian, Shane Waterman, and discover the real stories behind the places Dickens grew up near - and later used from his very first published folio (Sketches by Boz) to his very last - The Mystery of Edwin Drood. We'll show you Dickens' favourite City in the way on a local can - and include many stories you won't find in history books including the reason Dickens walked into Rochester three days before he died - only uncovered 141 years later! The ONLINE GUIDED TOUR is suitable for all ages, and school children will learn far more than in a classroom! You will be sent the Zoom meeting link for the tour approx TWO HOURS before the event by email. Please make sure you check your junk/spam folder if this has not arrived.
