The Platinum Jubilee Medway River Pageant

4th June 2022

A collection of historic, commercial and recreational craft will come together for a river pageant as part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations in Medway.

Around 100 historic, commercial and recreational craft will join the River Pageant.

The fleet will assemble by Sun Pier in Chatham

Brace yourselves for a wonderful cacophony as part of Medway's official celebrations for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

A collection of some 100 historic, commercial and recreational craft will assemble at Queenborough Harbour on the Isle of Sheppey and parade up the river to Sun Pier, Chatham on the Saturday of the Jubilee weekend.

The flotilla will feature historic ships such as the steam puffer VIC 96, a collection of 100-year-old Thames sailing barges, East Coast fishing smacks in addition to commercial and recreational craft, including a local rowing boat contingent who will join from Medway Yacht Club

The fleet will assemble by Sun Pier by 2.30pm to be reviewed by the Lord -Lieutenant of Kent, Lady Annabel Colgrain. The River Pageant will reach its climax at 3.30pm with 'The Grand Cacophony' - a three-minute synchronised spectacle of sights and sounds from ship to shore generated by the ships, viewing public and shoreside attractions and churches, further amplified by bells, sirens and whistles from The Historic Dockyard Chatham and a 21-gun royal salute at Fort Amherst.

Shoreside the fun will focus on Sun Pier and along Chatham Waterfront, where there will be food stalls, live music, craft stalls and more from 12pm onwards. The Cacophony craft stalls are free of charge and give children the chance to make their own fog horn, amongst other noisy toys.

Live Music Schedule

  • 12-1pm: Hot Rats (British traditional folk music)
  • 1.15-1.45pm: Choir (30-strong group of singers with popular music)
  • 2-2.45: Ruby & Ríos (original and well-known songs)
  • 3-3.30pm: Alcock & Brown (old time patriotic and British songs)
  • 3.45-4.15pm: Alcock & Brown
  • 4.30-5pm: Track Dog* and step dancers (some good-time music on banjo and guitar from across the pond)

Alcock & Brown

The River Pageant is being organised by Tiller and Wheel CIC, in association with Medway Council. Tiller and Wheel was set up in 2019 to raise the profile of the historic ships of the East Coast and encourage greater engagement with our rivers and coastline. They offer free sailing experiences throughout the year, supported by a patron scheme, to make sailing financially accessible to all.
